Flotation Products

Acknowledged throughout the minerals processing industry for its extensive research and development, Dorr-Oliver Eimco has remained the world’s largest supplier of flotation equipment. Now part of FLSmidth Minerals, the combined strength of this merger sustains industry reports that WEMCO and Dorr-Oliver flotation cells account for more than two-thirds of all annual sales globally. For the last decade the company has averaged annual sales in excess of 800 units. We attribute this success to our ability to provide either self-aspirated or forced-air flotation technology or a combination of the two. This flexibility enables us to provide the best technical solution for the customer.

WEMCO, EIMCO, and Dorr-Oliver flotation machines have earned global recognition for design innovations that deliver greater flotation efficiency with dramatic power savings. We are at the forefront of the industry’s trend to install fewer, but larger, units rather than multiple smaller cells to save space, power, maintenance, and auxiliaries.

FLSmidth Minerals now supplies the 257m3 WEMCO® SmartCell™ flotation cell which is the largest operating flotation cell in the world! After a successful start up in 2004 of the 257-cubic meter cell in Chile, additional orders for these super large cells have been coming in from around the world.

With proven performance in hydrodynamics, metallurgy, and mechanical reliability, FLSmidth Minerals is your One Source for superior flotation technology.

WEMCO SmartCell Flotation
The WEMCO® SmartCell™ flotation series retains the rugged WEMCO® 1+1® aeration mechanism that has been proven in thousands of installations worldwide. Its massive cast-iron bearing housing maintains accurate shaft alignment under all loads and moments, ensuring long service life. Induced air flow provides sufficient aeration, mechanical simplicity and capital economy. Like the 1 + 1® Flotation Machine, the SmartCell™ Flotation Machine can be serviced on-line and restarted easily under full load.

Dorr-Oliver Flotation
Dorr-Oliver Forced-Air Flotation Cells feature:
* Low power consumption – Streamlined pump-action vortex profile rotor and overhung type stator are more efficient than other Forced Air flotation units.
* Non-clogging low maintenance design rotor.
* High air dispersion capability – High shear rotor–stator combination gives a wider range of airflow adjustment than competitive systems and results in greater control of the flotation process.
* Superior metallurgical performance – Intense recirculation in a well defined mixing zone multiplies the chances of contact between mineral particles and air bubbles, providing for greater mineral recoveries and higher concentrate grades.
* Easier restarting mechanism – Overhung stator design and the vortex rotor profile keeps the pumping channels free of settled solids. This makes restarts easier after unplanned shutdowns.
* Low reagent costs – Air is a natural reagent in the flotation process. Having a wide air dispersion capability permits tuning your flotation plant to the optimum value for your process.

Xcell Flotation Cells
Numerous features have been incorporated into the XCELL design to take advantage of opportunities for improved metallurgical performance.
These opportunities include improving fine and coarse particle flotation and enhanced froth recovery.

Tank Design The symmetry afforded by the cylindrical tank design improves both hydrodynamics and froth recovery, resulting in improved metallurgical performance. The XCELL flotation machine design further enhances the performance of the cylindrical tank by placing the concentrate launders on the tank exterior. The XCELL Flotation Product line is unique in that external launders are offered on all cell sizes from the smallest 1.5 m3 size to the largest 160 m3 units.

Rotor
The XCELL rotor has eight blades and is radial flow in design. The rotor is constructed with a mild steel core and blades which are protected with a log-wearing cast urethane cover. Air injection ports are located under the rotor top plate between each set of blades.

The rotor in an XCELL machine is placed in the center of the tank to separate the energy input region (rotor) from the cell’s froth surface allowing for a quiescent froth-pulp interface while maintaining a short transport path from the contract region (stator volume) to the froth phase. This allows the XCELL to operate with shallow froths, if required, and reduces bubble particle disengagement by keeping the transport path relatively short.

Centering the rotor in the tank provides the opportunity to control the air rate. The ability to control the rate of air input enhances an operator’s ability to control and optimize metallurgical performance.

Vertical Baffles
Any cylindrical stirred tank reactor with a rotor on the center line needs baffles to eliminate swirling and effect proper mixing; vertical baffles improve mixing and in turn metallurgical performance. All XCELL flotation machines have at least four (4) vertical baffles, and in difficult suspension situations as many as eight (8) baffles may be used.

Slurry Flow Management
The XCELL flotation machine employs a unique draft tube-velocity cone combination that functions to distribute input power to the bottom of tank and manage slurry velocity. The velocity cone, a patented feature, reduces resistance to flow within the draft tube and maintains slurry velocity at levels sufficient to prevent sanding and lift coarse particles into the contact region, thus improving the probability of coarse particle flotation.

Drive Mechanism
V-belt drives are reliable, efficient, and a cost effective means to transfer power from the motor to the rotor. All XCELL flotation machines utilize a V-belt drive system ensuring trouble free service for years after the sale.

Oxallizer Oxidation Reactor
In response to industry demands for more efficient external oxidation technology to convert calcium sulfite to calcium sulfate or commercial grade gypsum, EIMCO has developed the innovative Oxallizer® Oxidation Reactor. In addition to complete sulfite oxidation, the Oxallizer can control gypsum crystal growth to produce particles with excellent dewatering and wallboard manufacturing characteristics. At the heart of this technology lies the unique and well-proven WEMCO® Induced Air Reactor that eliminates the need for costly compressors.

WEMCO Attrition Cell
The WEMCO® Attrition Machine (Sand Scrubber) was originally developed in conjunction with Owens-Illinois Glass Company to perform a needed scrubbing step in the treatment of glass sand. It met the requirement very well, is now used extensively by Owens-Illinois as well as other glass sand producers, and has spread to various other applications.

Flash Flotation
Flash Flotation offers a unique opportunity to improve performance in many mineral processing circuits. Successes in metal recovery of the gold, lead, nickel, copper, and platinum group of metals are well documented.

Agitair Flotation Cells
Effective, economical Agitair froth flotation machines were first developed in 1934 for a wide variety of metallic and non-metallic mineral floatation processes. Since then, Agitair has been acknowledged for its leadership in forced-air flotation design. The latest Agitair machines provide maximum recovery and high concentrate grade through controlled aeration and efficient agitation, even with wide variations in feed conditions. Agitair cells are available in sizes to suit the varied demands of the mineral processing industry from the 3-in-1 laboratory model to the 164 x 1000 model with 1000 cubic feet-per-cell volume.

ProFlote
ProFlote (patent pending) is a preflotation technology that substantially improves flotation separation. ProFlote has been installed in a number of mineral processing plants with spectacular financial benefits. ProFlote selectively aggregates fine mineral improving the kinetics and recovery of this fine mineral. It is selective for chalcopyrite, bornite, sphalerite and certain valuable minerals.
