Company Profile

ALSTOM JOHN THOMPSON (AJT) a subsidiary of Alstom SA (Pty) Ltd with it’s principal focus on being the best boiler and environmental solutions company serving the power generation and industrial markets both locally and internationally with innovation and enthusiastic responses.

The company, whose roots in the boiler industry go back to its founding in
Wolverhampton in 1870, began manufacturing in South Africa in 1954.

Today AJT's principal activity is the world-competitive design, manufacture, construction and maintenance of industrial boilers with steam outputs of up to 320 t/h and their combustion equipment. The company also designs and manufactures related products, incorporating heat transfer technology, and selectively undertakes high integrity fabrication work.

In addition to having developed in-house, world-class coal and fibrous fuel technology, AJT in common with 20 other leading international boiler manufacturers, is a design technology licensee of Eckrohrkessel.

Interchange of technology with this German licensor and its other licensees, with over 5 350 boilers operating world-wide, ensures AJT's access to the latest proven globally-competitive boiler technology.
AJT's combustion equipment development programme focuses on the company being a world leader in the firing of fossil and fibrous fuel. In this context, in competition with the world's leading manufacturers, AJT was selected by the World Bank as a Technology Transfer Partner to assist Chinese boiler manufacturers (burning low grade, high ash Chinese coals) to reduce emission levels to acceptable international standards.

Environmental Plant

Recognising the vast and challenging demands of ever tightening environmental regulations, regular interchange of technology within the ALSTOM group world-wide ensures common access to advanced technology to the benefit of all group companies and their customers.

AJT provides equipment for the cleaning up of emissions resulting from the firing of fuels or other processes which results in waste emissions to atmosphere. This includes:

Wet and Dry Electrostatic Precipitators

Pulse Jet Fabric Filters

Reverse Air Fabric Filters

Cyclones and Scrubbers

De-sulphurisation and De-nitrification Plants

Advanced Electronic Control Systems for the above

The company's head office and works situated at Beillville, Cape Town, was officially opened in 1954 and currently employs in excess of 300 people. The 24 800 sq m factory has grown into one of the largest heavy engineering facilities in South Africa.

As part of AJT's on-going quality programme, the company obtained SABS ISO 9001 Quality Management System listing in 1992. The listing includes design, which forms a major part of JTB's business, and further ensures that customers are provided with a quality product.

The stringent quality assurance requirements associated with the manufacture of boilerplant and pressure vessels have also led to the company being contracted to manufacture high integrity heavy fabrications for the petrochemical Industry, the Electricity Supply Commission and other strategic industries.

AJT has been serving South African industry for over 50 years, staying abreast of technological developments and playing an innovative role in the engineering field. This dedication won the company the South African Institute of Welding Gold Medal Award for service to South African Industry.
