The EMTS (Electric Monorail Transport System) has particularly been designed for the underground transport of men and material in non-explosive atmospheres. With a load carrying capacity of 30 tons and the ability to drive systems gradients of more than 30 degrees the EMTS can make transport in inclined gateroads considerably more efficient.

General Features of EMTS

Basically monorail systems may be comparable to ordinary rail bound transport systems. World-wide SMT SCHARF is by far the largest manufacturer for this type of equipment. Monorails are designed to transport men, material and rock.

What makes SMT SCHARF monorails outstanding to all other transport systems is that they implement most of the advantages of other systems and avoid most of their disadvantages as they can
  • easily negotiate steep and changing gradients and
  • have the ability to negotiate very sharp curves
  • require no special floor preparation
The SMT SCHARF monorails consist of a specially designed I-beam rail that is suspended from the roof by chains attached to roof bolts or arches or is directly suspended from the hanging wall by a suitable suspension bracket. The units run on the reinforced lower flange of the I-beam guided by rollers on the web. The design absolutely prevents any derailments – a major safety factor compared to any other transport technology.

Generally SMT SCHARF monorail systems are designed to carry loads in gradients of up to 25 degrees with friction drives. Even steeper gradients of up to 36 degrees may be negotiated by specially attached rack and pinion drives. The monorail-I-beams sections have an average length of 3.0 m for ease of handling, mounting and transportation. The system is designed to negotiate horizontal curves of down to 4.0 m and vertical curves of 10.0 m. Switches allow for the erection of wide spread-out rail networks.
