CSIR : Mining Technology was created from a merger between the Chamber of Mines Research Organization (known as COMRO) and the CSIR in 1993. As COMRO, it was established in the early 1960s to conduct a comprehensive research programme on behalf of, and co-operatively funded by, the major mining houses of South Africa.

Now a fully fledged contract research and development agency, CSIR : Mining Technology provides services both locally and abroad, to the gold, coal and base metals mining and associated industries.

CSIR : Mining Technology's parent body, the CSIR, is a statutory scientific research council established in 1945, and is the largest community and industry-directed scientific and technological research and development organization in Africa.
