Example of Savings Using the T8-T5 Retrofit Adaptor

Original Application is as follow 10 000 x standard 36 Watt 4 foot T8 fluorescent tubes with conventional electro-magnetic ballast and glow starter. In test conducted the final power consumption of the 36W T8 will be 75W and 100% power consumption.

Suggested Application 10 000 x standard 24 Watt 4 foot T5 fluorescent tubes with electronic / digital driver circuit. In test conducted the final power consumption of the T5 28W will be 28W and 38% power consumption because the need for inductive electromagnetic ballast and glow starter was eliminated.

Operating cost and Operating Hour per day

Assumed Electricity cost per kWh is 0.61 cents (2012/13 Eskom Average) and the operating 24 hours per day – 365 days per year.

This simple Calculation indicates your saving on the final power consumption of each tube
  • Energy saving per fitting 75W minus 28W 47W
  • Energy saving per day 47W x 24hrs x 10 000 fittings 11 280kWh
  • Energy saving per annum 11 280kWh x 365 days 4 117 200 kWh
  • Current saving per annum 4 117 200 kWh x 0.61 cents R 2 511492.00 ex vat
Saving after 16 % increases: (ex VAT)
  • Yearl @ 0.70 cents R 2 882 040.00
  • Year 2 @ 0.82 cents R 3 376 104.00
  • Year 3 @ 0.95 cents R 3 911 340.00
Total saving over Eskom’s three year price hike period: R 10 169 484.00 ex VAT

COST OF RETROFIT ADAPTERS X10 000 = R 960 000.00 fully installed (ex VAT).

These figures can add up to even greater savings seeing that this costing module exclude the reduced cost of maintenance & replacement achieved due to longer lamp life + 15 000 hours (1.7 Years) and the added benefit of a built in power surge protection.

An Example
  • To illustrate what this might mean, let us assume an installation in a large (2000 square meter) shop where there might be around one T8 lamp for every 2 square meters of ceiling. This shop would then have 1000 tubes fitted into 500 twin tube fittings.
  • Power consumption would be 1000 x 75W (rating of standard T8 tube) = 75kW.
  • If this shop opened every day for 12 hours a day then the monthly energy consumption can be determined as 30xl2x75kW = 27MW.h.
  • Using the 2010 average Eskom rate of 64c / kWh this energy costs 0.64 x 27 000 = R 17, 280.00 per month.
  • Reduce the power consumption to 28kW (T5 retrofit Tube and Ballast), the monthly energy consumption will drop to lOMW.h, the monthly energy cost will amount to R 6, 400.00
  • If we assume a supply and installed cost of R166.25 per lamp to replace the T8s with the T5s then the total cost of the change of 1000 lamps would be R 166, 250.00
  • The monthly saving of R 10, 880.00 per month would then indicate a capital recovery time of ± 15 months.
  • The effect of Replacing the T8′s with the electronic T5s
In order to reduce energy consumption the conventional ballasted T8 tubes in 4ft fittings, will be replaced with the electronic T5s. The change-over will be conducted as follow.
  • Unplugging the old tubes, opening the old fitting and cutting out the magnetic ballast.
  • The glow starter must also be removed and the fitting cover replaced.
  • Finally the electronic T5 lamp can then be plugged in.
The entire change-over operation is done in the minimal time and by trained professionals to reduce unnecessary down time.
