SKF Automatic Belt Tensioner Unit

SKF Automatic Belt Tensioner Unit

Product News Monday, March 17, 2014: Top Class Automotive

SKF has developed automatic timing belt tensioner units for engine applications with significant improvements including ease of installation and enhanced belt life compared to existing tensioner technology.

The function of the timing belt drive is to enable a synchronisation between the crankshaft and camshaft. The automatic belt tensioner unit maintains a constant belt tension ensuring reliable and efficient operation. This permits ideal engine performance.

The tensioner unit must provide a precise belt tension control in order to minimise transmission error and protect against “tooth jump”, resulting in loss of timing drive synchronisation.

This could lead to severe engine damage or failure. SKF’s tensioner units are designed to optimise belt tension which promotes belt life and minimises engine noise, throughout the entire operating range of the engine.

This is achieved through an accurate damping and spring control tuned to the requirements of each specific engine.

All tensioners are equipped with low friction ball bearings from SKF, pregreased and sealed.

The grease and seal are selected to fulfil high temperature requirements.

SKF has produced belt tensioner units for over 30 years and we are committed to provide optimised system improvements to our customers. SKF’s extensive know how in timing drives, their experience, in-house developed timing drive system analysis and design software, makes them an ideal partner for developing optimised solutions for belt timing drives.

Applications
The SKF mechanical dry-friction tensioner unit is optimised for engine timing belt drive applications.
