EngNet Survey #1 : Engineering Industry and the Internet

The first EngNet survey has been successfully completed. The results have been extremely interesting and informative as we can see how people are using the Internet in the engineering industry. Below are the results as well as our comments of the results received.

We hope that you find these statistics as informative as we have found them. If you wish to let a colleague, friend or client know about this survey, please type their Email address here and click send:

EngNet Comments:
It is interesting that 76% of users are using general search engines to find engineering products and services, rather than web sites that are specifically designed for the Engineering Industry. Presumably there two reasons for this:
  1. General Search Engines have been around longer than Engineering On-line services, and are more well known and marketed than Engineering specific services.
  2. Engineering Search Engines are not as comprehensive and easy to use as the General Search Engines.

Engineering search engines are getting better everyday. We believe that over time engineering search engines will bypass the general search engines in the Engineering Industry.

Since this is our first survey, we were encouraged that online services are being used more than offline versions (e.g. printed directories) to find Engineering Products & Services.

EngNet Comments:
EngNet has always promoted that Engineering websites need to provide detailed information to its users.
The results above show that users want quick and easy access to valuable information. This allows engineers to receive answers to questions quickly. Feedback forms only mean that they will receive a delayed response.

The other interesting stat is that only 20% of users would like to see Online Buying available. There are many aspects to consider when talking about Engineering and E-Commerce.  EngNet will be conducting a survey in the future that will cover more detail and will provide us with a more accurate measure.

EngNet Comments:
98% of users use Email daily
84% of users use the Internet daily
99% of respondents have said that the Internet has helped their work a little or a lot.
54% of respondents have received sales contacts through their websites.

These statistic have shown us that the Engineering Industry is using the Internet on a daily basis and it is helping them do their work more effectively.

Companies are also receiving the benefit through sales contacts generated from their websites, which means it is money well spent.  The above figures should be a good measure for companies who are deciding whether they should invest in a valuable website. A few companies are already providing valuable design tools over the Internet, and reaping the benefit. We hope that more and more engineering companies will invest in their websites that will help engineers design and get answers quickly and efficiently saving time.
