CARRIERES DU HAINAUT & BLUE LIMESTONE

CARRIERES DU HAINAUT & BLUE LIMESTONE

Product News Wednesday, April 1, 2015: HYCON MARECHAL TECHNOLOGY

Considered as the European center for cut stones, Soignies is famous for its building limestone: the blue limestone. Carrières du Hainaut has been exploiting it for 125 years and favors safety and quality in its daily activities.

Tradition and beauty for the eyes
Geographically, the development of blue limestone started during the second half of the 19th century. Scientific exploration of the subsoil and the development of the railways allowed the exploitation of this underground wealth: a noble, ornamental material. Spurred on by the Art Nouveau, its aesthetic qualities and the 17 finishing touches led to its integration in architectural projects and interior design.

Extraction under strict surveillance
Spread on a surface area of more than 80 hectares, the public limited company, Carrières du Hainaut, focuses its development on the different strata of the soil. Depending on the depth, silt, clayey silts (used to make bricks and cement), greater dodders (transformed into pellets) and white blocks are extracted and sized by different kinds of extraction and
production machines:
  • Rock cutters (cutting depth 3 cm/minute),
  • Thread milling machines: use cutting diamonds to cut natural stone blocks,
  • Pumping machines (drain water accumulated over time or by block cutting),
  • Loaders, shovels and tractors.
Extreme caution
The main difficulty for this kind of company is to deal with the safety of the 30 production workers. “Choosing reliable and sturdy equipment is essential on site which is exposed to dust and changing weather conditions”, explains Roland Flamecourt and Vincent Carette, respectively in charge of maintenance and electrical service.
“This is the reason why we have been working with MARECHAL ELECTRIC S.A. for about fifteen years and using your plugs and socket-outlets!”
The company chose the DS 125 A plug and socket-outlet DECONTACTOR™ to secure equipment handling and mobility. The machine-operators were informed of the load breaking principle. Constantly under load, the machines can be disconnected safely, with no risk of electric arcs. Workers do not need electrical skills to operate cabinets and equipment. Only the installation of extension cables and boxes is taken care of by the electrical service department.

Versatility and exposition
Workers must adapt daily to the ever-changing conditions of the site and the quarry. On this non-horizontal mineral deposit (20% gradient) and with progressive block-cutting, the plugs and socket-outlets are versatile: they allow workers to connect and move machines. Vincent Carette and Marc Flament, prevention consultants, focused on only one range of
sturdy and waterproof connectors. Exposed to fly rocks, dust and the comings and goings of vehicles, MARECHAL® plugs and socket-outlets are rated for all power needs and the many operations carried out by the teams, divided into 2 shifts over 5 days. Supplying electricity through blue plugs and socket-outlets is well-appreciated and contributes to workers’ safety in the blue stone quarry.
