Centrifugal pumps need to be fully primed in order to accelerate the medium they are pumping. In certain circumstances a centrifugal pump may need priming before it will be able to pump. A self priming pump contains a chamber filled with fluid that will give it enough energy or momentum on start up to draw fluid into the pump and thereby self prime.
