The idea that revolutionized production fastening
When K.A. Swanstrom founded Penn Engineering & Manufacturing Corp. in 1942, he did so with a revolutionary new product: an easy-to-install, self-clinching fastener that provides load-carrying threads in metal sheets too thin to be tapped.
At first, Mr. Swanstrom produced his innovative design with four machines in a Doylestown, Pennsylvania garage. This simple operation soon gave way to a modern facility in Danboro, Pennsylvania because manufacturers and engineers alike recognized the benefits of self-clinching fasteners. They not only reduced time, labor, weight and inventory on many assembly jobs, but they also opened up a whole new world for engineers and designers, making a wide assortment of thin-metal designs possible for the first time.
Industry-wide acceptance led to earnest production of self-clinching fasteners shortly after World War II. As industry’s need to hold together ultra-thin and ultra-light metals grew, so did the product line. Over the years the original self-clinching fastener design was modified to meet hundreds of new design applications.
Today, PennEngineering is a global company and industry leader with manufacturing facilities in Danboro, Pennsylvania; Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Galway, Ireland and Kunshan China. Our self-clinching, broaching, surface mounted, and flare-in fastener products are sold worldwide through an extensive channel of engineering representatives and distributors.
PEM brand fasteners utilize self-clinching, broaching, flaring, surface mount, or weld technology to provide strong, reusable, and permanent threads and mounting points in thin sheetmetal or P.C. board materials.
SI brand inserts employ press-in, molded-in, or heat/ultrasonic installation methods to provide strong, reusable, permanent threads in plastic materials.
ATLAS brand blind threaded rivets provide strong and reusable permanent threads in sheet materials where only one side is accessible.
The STICKSCREW system is a unique small screw installation system which eliminates expensive screw handling equipment and loose hardware. The screws are tightened to an exact torque as determined by the stick/screw design.
PEMSERTER presses are designed to safely, reliably, accurately, and quickly install PEM fasteners. No matter how complex or simple an installation challenge may be, using the PEM fastener and PEMSERTER press system will provide you with quality results.
3V™ products include Boeing, AN, MS and NAS certified fasteners. In addition they supply most of the world's leading aircraft companies with critical hardware.
QRP has been a leading supplier of quick release pins and accessories, both standard and special designs, for the military, aerospace, automotive, marine and other markets for over 30 years.

CSI (Cost Savings Investigation)
The PEM Cost Savings Investigation program was developed to help companies attain a lower "assembled cost" for their designs. You can put our global fastening expertise to work for you by allowing our CSI team to disassemble and carefully analyze your product. Our CSI team will then make recommendations to you on how to reduce fastener costs, aseembly time and/or assembly steps.
Our PEMNET.com fastening resource center provides the tools to help you determine which type fastener or installation equipment is right for you. It includes a complete CAD library, fastener selector tool, conversion tables, tutorials/animations, literature, tech help, and environmental compliance references.

We can assess your application and recommend equipment that helps you achieve your lowest installed cost. Systems can be developed to handle multiple fastener types simultaneously to address challenging component handling and fastener installation.
We’re equipped with the latest equipment to provide prototype samples and short run production quantities for your testing and analysis.
We have comprehensive testing facilities in each of our manufacturing locations. Tests include mechanical testing, tensile strength, compression, in sheet performance, micro hardness (Knoop, Rockwell and superficial), thermal cycling, image analysis, and corrosion and plating issues and analysis.

At PennEngineering, our goal is 100% defect-free product. To this end, we have adopted a manufacturing strategy of defect prevention rather than defect detection. We use statistical tools throughout our manufacturing processes to monitor the performance and assure effective quality control of each process step. If a non-conforming situation arises, it is resolved immediately with the use of appropriate quality assurance tools.
Our fastener quality management system is ISO9001 registered and Department of Defense QSLM approved, and we can support DFARS clause 252.225-7014 requirements. In addition, our Galway, Ireland, and Kunshan, China facilities are registered to Technical Specification ISO/TS 16949. This further underscores our commitment to excellence as we continue to provide quality products and services that meet or exceed our customers’ expectations.
We are members of the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) where we work together with other member companies to resolve issues critical to the automotive supply chain.
