Caliper Disc Brake

In a caliper disc brake, a friction device known as a brake pad is squeezed against a rotating wheel with a pair of brake calipers. The friction of the brake pad is used to slow the rotation of the wheel, or ultimately, to stop the rotation completely. The speed at which the braking occurs is dependent on the amount of squeezing force placed by the calipers and brake pads.
